Ford Enters the Hybrid Race with the Fusion
There has been a gaping hole in the mid-sized car segment from Ford with the loss of the Taurus a few years back.Since its first introduction in 2006, Ford has made many modifications to the Fusion including the new Hybrid power plant that the public have really been taking notice to.The Fusion Hybrid was finally revieled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in late 2008.The excellent in-town gas mileage is what makes the Ford Fusion Hybrid so unique. The Fusion hybrid gets a fuel economy rating of 41 MPG which beats its main competitor, the camry, by almost 10 more MPG; the Fusion even betters the Civic Hybrid in the city. The hybrid electric motor has the ability to power the Fusion up past 45 miles per hour without the help of the gas engine. Already there have been many automotive magazines that have employed this system to achieve much better MPG ratings then the EPA estimates.
The Fusion can help teach the driver which style of driving gets the best fuel economy. The Smart Gauge is a set of gauges built into the display. There are two displays on each side of the gauge cluster that show various hybrid info. The first monitor will indicate just how much gas is left and also how much energy is left in the battery pack. The second gauge tells which mode the car in in; electric or hybrid, and it also shows the RPM’s. The third screen displays engine and battery output power. The last data screen displays power to the wheels and additional accessory power consumption. All display screens show fuel efficiency, MPG record, voyage account, and changes in coolant temps. The real time MPG information can show drivers which driving style is best for fuel economy.
The navigation system also houses the Hybrid Energy Flow Display. These smart gauges will display the different features of the hybrid powerplant including the 2 drives (electric and hybrid), the boost, charging while idle, and of course regenerative braking.
What is really cool about the Fusion is that ford used reclaimed yarns to make the seats, no other hybrid can claim this.Toyota and Honda have been selling thousands of hybrids per year unchallanged, better late than never with Ford.
